East-Facing Window Plants: A Morning-Sun Placement Guide
An east-facing window usually gives plants gentle direct sun in the morning and bright indirect light later. It is one of the easiest apartment exposures, but distance, outdoor shade, and summer heat still matter.

How to place a plant in five minutes
- Check the spot between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on a clear day.
- Notice whether direct sun reaches the leaves, the floor only, or never enters the room.
- Check whether the plant can see a broad area of open sky from its final position.
- Choose a starting distance from the table, then keep the pot there for two to four weeks.
- Judge the placement by new growth rather than old leaves that formed elsewhere.
Plants that benefit from the morning sun
Hoya
A hoya can use several hours of gentle morning sun and often grows or flowers better close to the window. Acclimate a plant bought from a dim shop over a week instead of placing it immediately against the glass.
Monstera and rubber plant
Both prefer a bright position. Put them where the morning sun reaches the plant or just outside the direct beam. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every week or two if growth leans strongly toward the window.
Pothos and heartleaf philodendron
These adaptable vines can sit farther into the room, but adaptation is not the same as thriving. Longer gaps between leaves and smaller new leaves mean the plant should move closer.
Succulents
An unobstructed east window is useful but may still be marginal for sun-hungry succulents, especially in winter. Keep them on the sill, watch for stretching, and add a grow light if compact growth cannot be maintained.
Seasonal adjustments
Summer sun rises farther northeast and reaches some east windows early and intensely. Winter days are shorter, the sun is lower, and buildings may block more of it. Moving a plant 1–2 ft closer for winter is often more useful than changing the watering schedule alone. Keep foliage from touching cold glass.
